What Are the Best Materials for Lasting Poultry Shelters and Why?

When constructing a sturdy and comfortable home for your hens, the first step is to select the right materials. The quality of these materials will directly determine how safe, comfortable, and long-lasting the shelter will be. During construction, you can select materials that will protect your flock from nasty weather, predators, and general wear and tear.

With the right building materials or components, not only will you save on maintenance costs, but your hens will also stay healthy and continue to lay eggs year-round. Here is a list of the best materials for poultry housing, along with my recommendations for each.

Sturdy Wooden Structures

In terms of building chicken coops, wood is still one of the materials many people prefer for several reasons. Wood takes advantage of its naturally insulating capacity to keep warm in the winter and cool in the summer, so your flock stays comfortable.

Treated hardwood or weather-resistant plywood is ideal for keeping rot and pests away. A wood frame makes it easy to modify and allows for custom-built structure design. Remember, avoid using anything toxic to the birds in painting or sealing the wood.

Metal for Strength and Longevity

Metal products, such as roofing sheets and frames, offer excellent durability. Featuring durable characteristics, they can withstand harsh weather conditions, including heavy rain or snow, without warping or cracking. Metal roofs are useful in that they provide dependable protection and require little maintenance.

Additionally, metal parts, such as galvanized steel or aluminum, are resistant to rust, making them ideal for outdoor shelters. When combined with wooden walls, metal reinforcements provide an additional layer of strength and can add protection to the poultry shelter for many years.

Wire Mesh for Ventilation and Security

Wire mesh is a vital component for doors, windows, and outdoor runs. It allows for adequate airflow while keeping predators out of your birds’ living space. In contrast to chicken wire, using hardware cloth (or heavier wire) is preferable, as it will be more difficult for animals to tear open or chew through.

Hardware cloth is also great for use in adding a roof to outdoor spaces, giving your flock the freedom to be outside a coop without worrying about predators. The protection, along with the airflow that wire mesh provides, makes wire mesh a necessary item for chicken coops.

Weatherproof Roofing Materials

A durable roof is essential to protect your hens from rain, heat, and the wind. Most good poultry houses will use either corrugated metal sheets or asphalt shingles as roofing materials. They are good, durable materials for poultry because they are generally water-resistant and able to withstand extreme temperatures.

Sloped roofs allow for the drainage of excess water and prevent the accumulation of water, which can damage structures. Roofs must provide adequate shade on hot days to keep the interior cool and comfortable for the hens.

Concrete or Raised Flooring

The flooring of a poultry shelter needs to be durable, easy to clean, rodent-proof, and easy to clean. Since they are hard, durable, dense, non-absorbent, and easy to disinfect, concrete floors are the best option.

For wooden floors, ensuring that the wooden floor is raised allows for air circulation and minimizes water damage. Having removable bedding material (such as straw or wood shavings) on a wooden floor provides the animal with comfort and ensures that cleaning the shelter is simple daily.

Non-Toxic Finishes and Paints

Structural materials are a major consideration, but the finishes and paints we choose can also significantly impact durability. Consider the effect on durability of using non-toxic and weather-resistant paint or seal. Non-toxic finishes and paints channel moisture away from wood and metal surfaces, protecting them from pests and sun damage.

Good-quality finishes will prevent the surface from decaying, rotting, cracking, or rusting over time.  Hens tend to peck at surfaces, so be sure to choose bird-safe paints and finishes that will not pose a health risk to them.  A well-finished-looking shelter also has a longer service life with less upkeep.

Conclusion

By using the right combination of building materials, you can have a poultry shelter that is durable, worry-free, and comfortable. Wood can provide insulation, metal adds durable strength, and wire mesh can provide both security and ventilation. Concrete or raised flooring, along with high-quality materials, will also help exclude pests and moisture. Additionally, good roofing materials will contribute to the overall weather enclosure.

Whether you are building a poultry shelter from scratch or making improvements to an existing chicken coop, using high-quality materials to construct it helps add value and assurance to your poultry shelter for your birds. A well-built and maintained space pays off for both the hens and the poultry keeper.
